  Animal rescue

A few years ago, Shari Bach decided that she wanted to help animals in any way she could. She formed the Paws Unlimited Foundation in 2001, with the original goal of providing financial assistance to people who could not afford veterinary care and food for their pets. Having had three dogs who all had serious medical issues later in life, Shari realized how lucky her pets were that she could afford to pay for their medical care. Unfortunately, many people are not in the same position.

Shari started out by letting several veterinarians know that the Foundation would be willing to help clients who couldn't cover the cost of treatment for their pets. The various vets and animal hospitals would then contact Shari when a client was in a bad situation.

Shari started rescue work a couple of years later, because too often she would hear of an owner who had decided to give up a pet - not necessarily for financial reasons, but simply for the sake of convenience. Many sweet and loving pets find themselves homeless - even after years with their families - for reasons she still cannot understand. In these situations, Shari gets involved by making arrangements for foster care, putting up fliers, and eventually placing the pets in new homes.

Over the years, through Shari's work, Paws Unlimited has built up a network of contacts and volunteers who help with all these efforts. Working with a local veterinarian's office, Paws Unlimited has helped many animals find the happiness they deserve by placing them in suitable, loving homes. All medical care is covered by Paws Unlimited when placed in a new home, for the life of the pet. The Foundation also covers the cost of any special diet needs.

We emphasize making the most positive and successful experience possible for the animal, while addressing the growing demand for rescuing injured, abandoned animals, and accessing quality medical care at affordable prices. Several hospitals work with our organization and have agreed to do all exams, spaying and neutering for all the animals at a very low cost.

Though we have rescued and placed many animals, there are so many more who need our help. We are working to build a new shelter in Kingston, New York, in the hope that we may expand our work and help animals on a larger scale. Please see our Building a Shelter page for more information.
